Some 102 leaders and activists of BNP, including its Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed were discharged by a Dhaka court on Tuesday from a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
Judge Mohammad Ibrahim Miah of First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge court passed the order after hearing on the discharge petitions submitted by the accused.
The other prominent leaders who got free from the case are BNP Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Saiful Alam Nirob, former president of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Zainul Abedin, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal President Shafiul Bari Babu, BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku and Jubo Dal organising secretary Ishak Ali Sarker.
Tuesday was fixed for holding hearing on charge framing in the case. But the accused submitted discharge petitions claiming that they are innocent.
After hearing on the discharge petition the trial court discharge them from the case.
Police filed the case on January 30, 2018 for allegedly obstructing the law enforcing agencies from conducting their duties and vandalizing vehicles. Charge-sheet was filed against 102 accused on January 28, 2020.
