BENAPOLE, Sept 26: Amid debate over the export decision of the country's national fish, the first consignment of 12 metric tonnes of hilsa was sent to India through Benapole land port on Thursday ahead of Durga Puja.

Three trucks carrying the hilsa fish were sent to India by three export-import organisations and reached the India's Petrapole Port.

The export of hilsa need to be ended within October 12, said a fisheries official at Benapole.

In response to the "special request" from India for the Durga Puja festival, the Ministry of Commerce approved the export of 2,420 metric tonnes of hilsa through 49 export agencies.

Aswadul Islam, Fisheries Inspector of Fisheries Inspection and Quality Control Office of Benapole Port, said 12 metric tonnes of hilsa was exported after checking quality at noon.     —UNB
