MADHUPUR, TANGAIL, Sept 29:  Traditional pineapple of Madhupur in the district has received Geographical Identification (GI) product recognition.

A notification signed by Munim Hasan, director general of the Directorate of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry, was issued on Tuesday (Sept 27).

In view of the District Commissioner's (DC) application, the product is listed as GI-52 in Class 31.

Madhupur region is known as the capital of pineapple. Pineapple cultivation was first started in Bangladesh in 1942.

Ethnic Garo community of Idilpur Village in Madhupur Upazila was the first to cultivate pineapple. They brought 750 saplings from Meghalaya to start the cultivation. By enriching that cultivation, pineapples are now farmed in different parts of the country.

Chanowar Hossain, a farmer of Madhupur who won the national award, said, "The history and tradition of Madhupur is our pineapple. We are proud, happy and excited to be recognized as a GI product. For the pineapple, Madhupur will remain a bright star in the world map."

Tangail DC Sharifa Haque said, "After Tangail's loom sari, and Chamcham, Madhupur's pineapple got GI product recognition. We are happy with this and also thank the authorities concerned. The availability of GI will further expand its global branding and commercial cultivation. We will take massive initiative to reap the benefits of GI. Several other products of Tangail have been applied for GI recognition."
