Jagannath University (JnU) will observe its annual University Day on October 20, marking the occasion with tributes to the historic July revolution martyrs.
In a gesture of respect for the martyrs who lost their lives and those injured during the student movement, the university has decided to forgo its traditional concert this year. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Rezaul Karim during a meeting on Monday to discuss plans for the institution's 19th founding anniversary.
Instead of hosting a concert, this year's celebrations will include memorials and prayers to honour the martyrs and pray for the swift recovery of the injured, the Vice-Chancellor confirmed.
During the meeting, Deans of various faculties and department heads unanimously supported the decision to cancel the concert.
Nevertheless, as in previous years, the day will feature a rally, a theatrical performance, and a video documentary portraying the legacy of the revolution. Additionally, the newly admitted students of the 2023-24 academic session will be formally welcomed to the university on this occasion.
The decision to cancel the concert has sparked mixed reactions among the student body, with some expressing support while others voiced disappointment. Addressing the divided opinions, Vice-Chancellor Dr Rezaul Karim remarked, "Our hearts are still heavy with grief. Those we lost in the July Revolution can never be replaced. As long as we hold in our minds the memories of those still receiving treatment in hospitals, it is impossible to fully embrace celebration."
He further emphasised, "How can we, in good conscience, indulge in joy at a time like this? There will certainly come a time when we can celebrate together, but not now. We are considering organising a convocation at the earliest opportunity, where we can all gather and celebrate when the time is right."
