NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Oct 2: Garo hills in Nalitabari Upazila of the district are set to return to natural forestry in order to protect biodiversity.

Earlier, natural forests were destroyed, and, on the participatory basis, woodlot gardens of foreign species of Akash Moni and Eucalyptus trees were created.

Later on, hilly steams turned non-functional, causing threat to the hilly biodiversity.

Now considering the environmental balance under long-term basis, mixed forests are being created with local trees in the hilly forests under the Madhutila Forest Range of Mymensingh Division.

At present, Garo hills have been blanketed with brightly grown forests of local trees.

These forests are adding new dimension to the locality with tourism attraction.

Local people and tourists are coming to see the Garo hills from far areas.

In 1989-'90 financial year (FY), natural forests were cut on the Garo hills, and social plantation was created for socio-economic development of the ethnic people.

Later on, forest animals and birds fell into survival threats. Since 2000, due to lack of natural food on the hills, wild elephants started to come to plain land in search  of food and vandalised localities.

To protect the biodiversity in the FY-2017-'18, the Forest Department started to plant natural trees on the Garo hills.

Under this  plantation programme, Gorjon,  Chhatian, Horitoki, Bohera, Sonalu, Polash, Jarul, Dewa, Kanchan, Jolpai, Shal, Pitraj, Arjun, Ashok, Amloki, Agor, Kadam, Kathbadam, Kirshnachura, Koros, Kamranga, Golapjam, Gab, Gamar, Chikrasi, Chalta, Champaful, Chapalish, Jam, Jambura, Joggadumur, Dhakishak, Tentul, Telsur, Boroi, Tun, Debdaru, Nim, Nageshwar, Panial, Bajna, Mahua, Roktachandon, Rubber, Lohakath, Shil Koroi, Shimul, Shirish and turmeric were planted in phases.

There are 4,235.29 acres of forest land in Batkuchi, Sandhakura and Somoschura forests bits under Madhutila Forest Range.

Of this forest land, so far mixed forests have been raised on 345 hectare (ha) of land.

At present the Garo hills have regained natural looks.

When these forests will grow fully, tiger, bear, pig, elephant, forest hen, jackal and  vulture will get reserved areas.
These will also play special role in protecting climate.

Madhutila Forest Range Officer Rafiqul Islam said, mixed forests including cane garden have been created on 400 ha of land in the Madhutila Range.

Under the long term project, more mixed gardens will be created in the range, he added.

Mymensingh Divisional Forest Officer A N M Abdul Wadud said, about 50/60 species of trees including medicinal one have been planted in the mixed gardens; Garo hills will get their natural look gradually; besides, these endangered trees will also become use of researches in education expansion.

Under the FY-2019-'20, mixed gardens are created under successful project, he added.

He further said, as new creepers are growing up in these forests, the food crisis of wild elephant will be solved; herds of hungry elephants will not run to vandalise the localities; and public life will be safe.

Besides, forest resources worth crores of taka can be collected, the divisional officer added.
