Iranian attack on Israel escalates ME tension

Iranian missile attack on Israel has fueled fears that it would make the entire Middle East region tinderbox, with the situation spinning out of control of the United States in particular and the world community as a whole.

To say the least, a full-scale war or even a limited one between Israel and Iran could be a catastrophe for both the mortal enemies-Iran and Israel apart from other countries like Lebanon, Yemen and other parts of the region.

Since October 7, 2023 when Hamas and several other Palestinian militant groups launched sudden armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into the southern Israel, it has been considered for the first time that an Iran-Israel conflict is imminent.

This is because Israel has vowed to retaliate with its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu making a strong warning though the extent of destruction from Iranian onslaught has not yet been ascertained. But one person was reportedly killed with slight scars seen at the two air bases as Iranian missiles were mostly repulsed by Israeli defenses with the help of the US and its allies.

But Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that 90% of their projectiles had hit the targets. It was because hypersonic missiles had been used for the first time.

Iran on Monday fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles in the largest ever offensive on Israel since the Arab-Israel war in 1967 and that was the second attack by Iran this year after it launched hundreds of missiles and drones on Israel in April.

This massive Iranian missile attack on Israeli territories was in retaliation to Israel's killing of one of IRGC's top commanders and a leader of Iran-backed militias in the region. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan were killed in the Lebanese capital Beirut on 27 September. IRGC also referenced the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.

US President Joe Biden reaffirmed US support for Israel after the Iranian missile attack. Although White House has defended Israel's right to strike back at Iran, it is seemingly advising against direct attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities that could invite all out response from Iranian side.

Meanwhile, Israeli armed forces have continued their massive attacks in Palestinian cities of Gaza, West Bank, Khan Younis and other areas. As a result, over 42,000 Palestinians were killed until Monday including nearly 16,500 children and more than 96,359 people injured.

We urge the world community mainly the US which has been deeply involved in the Middle East crisis to immediately intervene in any further escalation of Iran-Israeli conflict.
