Tiger population in Sundarban poised for growth

Results of latest survey to be announced on Oct 8

The government is set to announce the results of the tiger count in the Sundarbans (Bangladesh part) on 8 October.

The Khulna Forest Office has completed the survey, marking the third large-scale tiger count in the Sundarbans, following similar efforts in 2015 and 2018.

The 2022 survey was part of two mega projects focused on tiger conservation, using 484 tracking cameras and a budget of 3.6 billion taka.

"The tiger count in the Sundarbans, conducted with more than 1,200 camera traps, has been completed, and we are optimistic that the number of tigers has increased since the last survey in 2018," a senior official said.

Earlier, the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE) 2022 reported that the population of wild tigers in India is estimated to be a minimum of 3,167, with 3,080 identified as unique individuals. This represents an increase of 619 tigers from the 2018 AITE.

Previous surveys in the Sundarbans found 106 tigers in 2015 and 114 in 2018. With the latest count now complete, expectations are high that the tiger population has grown, raising hopes for continued conservation success.

However, local environmentalists are calling for greater transparency and accountability in the use of funds, urging the government to focus on long-term development for the region's human population as well.

The tiger population in the Sundarbans, a crucial guardian of the region's unique ecosystem, remains a focal point of both environmental and public interest.
