At least seven people, including siblings, have died after being swept away in floodwaters at three upazilas in Sherpur in the last two days.
Of the deceased, Idris Ali, 65, Johura Khatun, 70, and Omiza Khatun, 45, died on Friday (October 4) and two brothers--Hatem Ali, 30, and Alamgir Hossai, 18, sons of late Bashir Uddin from Abhaypur village-- found dead on Saturday afternoon at Nalitabari upazila, and one each at Nakla and Jhenaigati upazilas on Saturday night.
Quoting local UP member, Upazila Project Implementation Office Anwar Hossain Shamim said Alamgir has swept away in the floodwaters after slipped on a flooded road on Friday. When his younger brother Hatem Ali tried to save him, he also swept away and since then, both the siblings were missing.
Police recovered the bodies from the crop field in Kutubakura village of Nanni union in the upazila on Saturday.
Locals said Ambia slipped on a flooded road around 5PM on Friday while heading to a shelter with her five-year-old child and was swept away. The child, however, survived by clinging to a tree.
Idris was swept away by floodwaters while returning home from a kitchen market around 4:30PM on Friday.
Nalitabari UNO Masud Rana said a total of 123 shelters have been opened, Already, more than 10,000 people have took shelter.
New areas in the district were flooded as water has increased.
