Puja shopping gains momentum in Khulna

KHULNA, Oct 6: Markets, shopping centres, malls and stores in the city are witnessing huge rush of customers ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the country's Hindu community.

Owners of the business establishments were a bit doubtful about poor sales compared to the last year ahead of the puja due to unexpected situation in the wake of fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.

Yet, the apprehension is now over after the Interim Government led by Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has been formed.

Markets, shopping centres, malls and stores  in the city are already in a festive look ahead of the five-day Durga Puja, starting from October 9.

Fashion houses have brought in new collections, with many brands offering up to 50 per cent discounts.

On Friday and Saturday, the huge rush of shoppers was seen in the city's New Market, Borobazar and KDA Avenue area. 

Clothing outlets of different local brands including Aarong, Richman, Infinity, Anjan's, Zentle Park, and Adlib were seen crowded with consumers.

The same picture was seen in cosmetic shops, and shoe stores. 

Consumers were seen purchasing their chosen items of different brands of cosmetic and other brands of shoes.

Alif Islam, owner of Aponjona in New Market, said, selling of Jamdani and Katan saris has increased.

"We are also selling three-pieces, Lehengas, and other popular clothes," he added.

He further said, sales are going better this time on the occasion of Durga Puja. 

Many could not go to neighbouring Kolkata for shopping as they did not get their visas on time. Because of this reason, they are now shopping in the country. So, sales in the city's markets are getting better. 

This correspondent of The Daily Observer  found crowds of buyers in the city's Shibbari intersection, New Market, Dakbangla intersection, Picture Palace, Boro Bazar, Jalil Super Market, Railway Market, Nixon Market, and Khulna Shopping Complex.

Traders said, saris and Salwar-Kameez are much demanded. Buyers are much interested about Katan, Silk and designed saris. 

Jamdani demand is also higher. 

Basob Kumar Nandi in the city's Lower Jashore Road area came with her wife Swapna Rani Nandi to Boro Bazar for shopping.

Swapna said, she bought saris and dresses for all of her family members.

Uzzal Saha, owner of Chandrani in Zalil Market, said, average sale of saris is good.

Rajibul Islam, owner of Rajib Cosmetics in  KDA New Market, said, the sale of cosmetics items continues throughout the year and is still going on. But demand increases ahead of festivals including Durga Puja, he added.

Traditional shops of Boro Bazar, and Nixon Market have become bustling with shoppers likewise every year centring the Durga Puja.
The Sharadiya Durga Puja will begin from October 9 with Maha Shasthi. On October 13, it will come to an end with the immersion of the idols on the day of Bijoya Dashami.
