Egg syndicate raises head again

The egg syndicate, active again, raised price  unreasonably.

The price of eggs is currently 8.42 per cent higher than it was in the last month.

The sudden egg price increase has increased st pressure on lower-middle and the middle income groups.

Common people have reduced consumption of fish, meat and  eggs.

The government had fixed price of eggs at producer, wholesale and retail levels.

Consumers are angry with the unstable market. Traders blamed supply shortage.

Consumers blamed dishonest businessmen for the price hike.

Eggs are a  major source of protein for low  income families.

Brown eggs now cost Tk 165 to Tk 170 per dozen in the capital's retail market.

The Department of Livestock on August 15, fixed price of each egg at Tk 11.87 at the retail level.

But it is being sold at a much higher price.

Wholesalers and suppliers in the capital's Tejgaon area said egg production has dropped due to recent floods and high temperatures.
Many small farms have closed. Some farms' production also decreased. As a result, there is a shortfall between demand and supply. It has an impact on the market.

However, Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) President Suman  Howladar said, "The poultry sector has been facing change in recent years. Those who used to control the market still do it. Due to floods and high temperature, egg production decreased by 20 to 25 lakh per day. At present, 40 lakh to 45 lakh eggs are produced daily across the country. And the demand is about four crore. Mainly the demand, supply and price of eggs are controlled by big corporate organisations and various trade associations. Apart from that there are syndicates in the feed market as well."

Retailers blamed floods for the increased egg price.

However, wholesalers who have been increasing egg price, blamed increased feed price for the situation.

As the price of feed does not increase every day,  why is the price of eggs is increasing every day. There is definitely manipulation here.

Mohammad Sharif, an egg trader in the capital's Malibagh market, said that a month ago he sold the farm eggs at Tk 155 per dozen, now they have to sell them at Tk 170 or Tk 180.

On Saturday, "Each egg cost Tk 13.50. Two days ago it was Tk 13.10. Before that, it cost  Tk 12.60. It is unusual for the price to rise at this rate."

During raids in the capital's wholesale markets on Friday officials the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection found evidence of irregularities including making extra profit.

They had raided Karwan Bazar, Shyambazar and Mirpur-1 Shah Ali Market in the capital.

At Shah Ali Market, vendors did not give receipts. As they found  Bhai Bhai Enterprise was doing this company's business activities were closed until further instructions. Apart from this, irregularities were also found in Shyambazar and Kawran bazar.

Abdul Jabbar Mandal, Assistant Director of the Dhaka District Office of the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection, said that various irregularities and manipulations are being reported from the egg market.

Traders do not keep receipts of purchase and sale, or even registers of stocks. A company buys eggs at Tk 12.60 per piece and sells them at Tk 13.20 per piece. They sell one to two lakh eggs per day. It shows how much extra profit the dishonest traders are making.

Market people say that nothing has changed in the market due to lack of proper action and enforcement of laws. This caused sudden instability in the market.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Vice President SM Nazer Hossain said that excessive profits are being made as before.
