MEHERPUR, Nov 23: Around 10-kilometre road connecting Hemayetpur, Shimultala, Sohrabaria and other villages with Gangni Upazila town has become unfit for use due to lack of repairing for the last 15 years.
Though numerous potholes have developed there, hundreds of vehicles ply on the road every day.
Villagers asked the public representatives and concerned department many times to repair the road, but no action was seen. As a result, the people are getting
agitated.
The road was constructed in 2001 for convenience of the villagers, traders and students of Kunjanagar, Shimultala, Hudapara, Rayerkandi, Kamarkhali and Sindurkota villages under Gangni Upazila. Locals complained that the road was constructed using substandard materials at that time. The bitumen and macadam were damaged one decade ago, and numerous potholes were developed.
The road is very important for going to Gangni and neighbouring Alamdanga Upazila towns. It may be mentioned here that vehicles carrying patients have to cross extra nine kilometres to reach the main road. But, if the road would be fit, they would only cross three kilometres.
Tikka, a cattle trader of Kamarkhali Village under Gangni Upazila said, "At least 50 cattle traders of the area use the road for taking cattle to different cattle markets of the district and to those of neighbouring districts. As the road has become unfit for use, no commuters use it during evening for security concerns. Taking advantage of the situation, the snatchers and robbers conduct crimes stopping vehicles. For this reason, the traders are compelled to cross extra 10 kilometres."
Fazlul Haque, head teacher of Mikusish Secondary School, said, "More than thousand students use this important road regularly, but they cannot reach their destinations timely due to its unfit condition. The local lawmaker, Mokbul Hossain, also goes to his village home through another road."
Liakot Hossain, upazila engineer, said that his office has sent a letter to the concerned office seeking allocation for repairing the road.
Mokbul Hossain, MP, said that he knew about the pitiable condition of the road and requested Local Government Engineering Department to send letter to the ministry concerned for taking steps to repair the road.
