Novak Djokovic’s injury problems will continue into the new year.

Due to a lingering elbow ailment, Djokovic — the winner of 12 Grand Slam titles — announced that he has withdrawn from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

It is now uncertain whether he will be able to play in the Australian Open, which begins on Jan. 15.

"I am terribly disappointed that I am forced to withdraw from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship," Djokovic said in a statement. "Unfortunately, in the past few days I started to feel pain in the elbow and after several tests, my medical team has advised me not to risk anything, to withdraw from the tournament and to immediately continue with the therapies."

Andy Murray will replace Djokovic in Abu Dhabi.

"Now I need to accept this situation, and to wait for the results of the therapies, in order to start playing tennis again and getting back to full rhythm,” Djokovic said. “This might affect the start of the season and the tournament plan, but the decision will be made in the following days."

Djokovic has not played competitively since Wimbledon, where he retired during the quarterfinals because of the elbow. He missed the US Open.

Djokovic has won six Australian Open titles since 2008, including three straight from 2011-2013. He also won the last two.
