‘Tomtom’, a traditional vehicle of Rajshahi has has been set up a historic symbol of the city.
With a view to preserve the past history and tradition, a sculpture of Tomtom has been built at Gater Road Baharampur Moar area of the city.
Designed by artist Faisal Mahmud, the construction of this heritage symbol worth Tk 17 lakhs took two years.
Once Tomtom was one of the main vehicles was of Rajshahi region. For this reason, Rajshahi city was called the city of Tomtom. However, use of this popular vehicle has become a rare.
The sculpture was made by cast and fiber sheet.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor Mohammad Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul unveiled the sculpture on Monday evening. The place of the sculpture is named as ‘Oitjhyaa Chattar’.
RCC ward councilor Mohammad Habibur Rahman, chief engineer Mohammad Ashraful Haque, engineer Khandakar Khairul Bashar and deputy assistant engineer Mir Shahriar Sultan, among others, were present on the occasion.
