‘Madhu Mela’ begins at Sagordari on Saturday

A weeklong fair marking 194th birth anniversary of great poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt will begin at village Sagordari in Keshabpur Upazila of Jessore district on Saturday.

 

Different cultural organisations in association with the cultural affair ministry, district and upazila administration have taken various programmes on the occasion.

 

The fair, titled ‘Madhu Mela’, will continue till January 26, in remembrance of Madhusudan, the originator of Bangla sonnet, reports BSS.

 

The programmes include circus, sports competition, seminar on Madhusudan’s life and works and cultural functions during the fair.

 

Local Government, Rural development and Co-operatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain will inaugurate the fair as the chief guest.

 

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda MP, State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique MP, State Minister for youth and sports Dr. Shri Biren Sikder MP, Kazi Nabil Ahmad MP, Sheikh Afil Uddin MP, Swapon Bhattacharja MP, Ranjit Kumar Roy MP, Advocate Monorul Islam Monir, Police Super Mohammad Anisur Rahman, District Awami League president Shahidul Islam Milon and secretary and Sadar Upazila Chairman Shahin Chaklader will be present as special guests.

 

A total of 200 stalls have already been set up on the fair venue.

 

Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born in a zamindar family at Sagardari on January 25, 1824, to Rajnarayan Dutt and Janhabi Devi. He died at Kolkata General Hospital on June 29, 1873, only three days after his wife Henrietta peathed her last. The poet was buried at Park Street in Kolkata.
