International community and human rights groups are closely monitoring the Bangladesh's political situation following the verdict of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Most of the missions stationed in Dhaka have started sending political reports to their respective countries after a long 4 years on regular basis. It also gives political information and updates of the political parties programmes to its citizens and issuing 'security alert' for political reason for its citizens' residing in Dhaka.
"BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was jailed for five years on Thursday (February 8) after she was found guilty in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. However, the US and Australia have issued separate security alerts (demonstration alert) for their nationals living in Bangladesh from that date. Earlier, we issued the same alerts in last few years for terrorism," a senior official of an embassy said.
Following the verdict, the US and Australian embassy in Dhaka in updated alert asked its citizens to review their personal security plans, remain aware of their surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.
Following that verdict, the United Nations has called on all sides to maintain calm over the conviction of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by a special court.
In its regular media briefing on Thursday and Friday, the United Nations said their political colleagues are studying the situation in Bangladesh and called for calm.
"Yes and we are continuing to monitor the situation on the ground. As you're aware, we did appeal for calm and we expressed our concern at the violence and we continue to do so," Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq told reporters in a regular briefing on Friday at its headquarters.
