Discussants explore Anwara Bahar’s immense contributions

On the occasion of the birth centenary of educationist, author, social and cultural activist Anwara Bahar Chowdhury, Anwara Bahar Chowdhury Birth Centenary Celebration Council organised a commemorative meeting at Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum on February 13. The programme featured musical soiree, documentary screening and discussion. Tagore artists Nasrin Shams, Sadi Mohammad and Shama Rahman rendered several songs at the event.   
Nazrul exponent Professor Rafiqul Islam said, "Anwar Bahar Chowdhury was a versatile genius. He was a writer, cultural organiser and social activist."
Prantosh Bandyopadhyay said, "Anwara removed illiteracies, superstitions, ignorance from the society through her keen analytical and authentic thinking process. She had delivered immense contributions to our education and literary scenario."
Mofidul Haque, publisher and one of the trustees of Liberation War Museum opined that Anwara was a highly progressive cultural mentor and had a very sophisticated personality. She was admitted to Sakhawat Memorial Girls' High School. She passed matriculation in 1934. She completed her higher secondary school examination and BA degree from Bethune College of Kolkata. She passed Bachelor in Teaching from Scottish Church College in 1941."
Professor Anisuzzaman presided over the discussion. He commented, "Anwara was a social reformer and highly creative person by nature. She always engrossed herself in the field of enrichment and cultural and social reform. She started to write literature from her school days. Her first writing was published in 1934 at Saogat."
Anwara Bahar Chowdhury was born on February 13 in 1919 and died on October 27 in 1987. She was a Professor of Bengali literature of the University of Calcutta (now Kolkata). She became Secretary of Anjuman-e-Khawatin-e-Islam, or the All Bengal Muslim Women's Association established by Begum Rokeya. She served as the Headmistress of Vidyamoyee Girls' High School, Kamrunnesa Girls' High School and Bangla Bazar Government Girls' High School. She wrote several books which include biographies, school textbooks and books for children. She also published her collection of poems, "Amar Chetonar Rang".
