The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) authority has filed a complaint with Jalalabad Police Station of Sylhet in connection with the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal.
SUST Registrar Ishfaqul Hussain filed an attempted murder complaint under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Jalalabad Police Station on Sunday, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Golam Kibria.
"We filed a complaint with Jalalabad Police Station last night," SUST Registrar Ishfaqul said and added, "Faizul and several unidentified suspects have been made accused in the complaint."
The detained uncle of Faizur Rahman Faizul, who attacked the writer and Professor Zafar Iqbal in Sylhet, used to introduce himself as a leader of the ruling Awami League (AL).
It was learnt that Fazlur Rahman, the uncle of attacker Faizul, is a joint convener of Sunamganj District Kriskak League. However, local AL leaders said he was not a member of the party.
Police detained Fazlur during a drive at Faizul's Sheikhpara house in Sylhet on Saturday night.
Sources said Fazlur, hailing from Sunamganj's Jagannathpur, built a house in Sheikhpara and has been living there for four years.
He is a close associate of Awami League Sunamganj district unit General Secretary Enamul Kabir Emon. The duo was seen together in rallies, meetings and other programmes of the party, local leaders said.
Demonstration continued on Sunday protesting the attack on the SUST teacher and noted writer Prof Zafar Iqbal. Nearly 3,000 students of SUST held marches on the campus as part of a massive protest against the stabbing attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal.
Prof Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department and also head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department, came under attack on Saturday at Muktamancha on the campus while he was addressing a function arranged by EEE Department.
Teachers, students and employees on Sunday formed human chain, held rallies, brought out processions, issued condemnation notes, wore black badges and arranged mass signature campaign protesting the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal and placed a three-point demand.
The demands include proper investigation, speedy trial of the incident, and proper security on the campus.
A large number of teachers formed a human chain in front of the Central Library Building at around 11:00am on the campus under the banner of Shahjalal University Teacher's Association (SUTA).
Speakers at the human chain said it was beyond imagination that such an attack can take place on the campus amid tight security.
"He (Zafar) was targeted by extremist group as he was always vocal against anti-liberation forces. He was threatened several times before. But, we should not be afraid. We have to raise our voices against militant activities across the country," one of the speakers pointed out.
They said they demanded proper investigation into the incident and punishment of those who were directly or indirectly involved in the incident. They also demanded beefing up of security on the campus.
SUTA President Prof Syed Hasanuzzaman and Secretary also the Proctor Associate Prof Jahir Uddin Ahmed, among others, spoke.
Earlier several thousand students under the banner of general students brought out a procession on campus that paraded the main streets and ended in front of the Central Library Building at around 9:00am where a rally was held.
Later, activists of Sammillita Sangkitik Jote, a platform of cultural organizations on the campus and leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) SUST unit brought out separate processions on the campus protesting against the attack. While employees formed a human chain and members of the Shahjalal University Press Club wore black badges.
Different teachers' groups that includes Mohan Muktijuddher Chetomay Udvuddha Teachers Panel, Mohan Muktijuddho O Muktachinta Charchay Oikkabaddha Teachers Panel and Mohan Muktijuddho, Bangladeshi Jatiyatabad O Dharmio Mullobodhe Biswashi Teachers Panel, Bangdhabandhu Teachers' Forum and different political, socio-cultural organizations issued separate condemn press over the issue and demanded punishment of attacker. General students started collecting mass signatures to press home their demands.
General people formed a human chain at Central Shaheed Minar at Chaouhatta in Sylhet city over the issue. Several thousand people from all strata participated.
Condemning the attack, Vice Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed on Sunday afternoon at his office said, the security on the campus would be beefed up. VC also said he has asked the departmental chiefs and different bodies to be more responsible.
