Fishermen catch hilsa aplenty from Bay

COX'S BAZAR, Mar 10: The local fishermen are catching abundant hilsa fish from the Bay of Bengal.
The fishing trawlers with huge amount of hilsa are arriving at Nuniarchhara fish landing station. While visiting the station on Tuesday morning, massive amount of hilsa was found while businessmen, workers, fishermen and trawler owners were busy in their activities.
Failing to land at the station directly, the owners are anchoring their trawlers at about 200 gauges away from the station from where the fishermen are bringing hilsa on small boats. As a result, both the fishermen and the trawler owners are counting extra amount.
Sources at Nuniarchhara fish landing station said huge hilsa are being caught from the Bay of Bengal since the first week of last February. As a result, the other trawlers, which catch various fishes, are also catching hilsa now. At least 40 to 50 fishing trawlers land at the station with hilsa daily. Besides, some fishing trawlers are also arriving from Chittagong and Barisal.
The landing station sources said at least 572 metric tons of hilsa were brought here in February last, which is several times more than the previous year. Meanwhile, at least 18 tonnes of hilsa have been caught till March 3 of this year. If hilsa is caught in such amount, it will break all previous records.
Fishermen said though they are netting more hilsa since February last, most of those are small-sized. Only 15 per cent hilsa were caught which weigh 600 grams while the medium-size hilsa weighing 300 to 450 grams and small-size one weighing 150 to 250 grams are being netted more.
Because of excessive hilsa netting, the price is somewhat low at the station; so the trawler owners are frustrated.
Abdul Haque, owner of FB Razibul Haque fishing trawler, said, "I have 18 crews in my trawler. They went to the Bay 10 days back and caught 1.5 tonnes of hilsa. I sold the fish at Tk 2.5 lakh only. I couldn't make much profit."
Businessman Mohammad Rana at the landing station said, "I do business here with three others jointly. We buy hilsa from the trawlers and send those to Dhaka. We bought Tk 6 lakh hilsa which we will sell at Tk 12 to 15 lakh in Dhaka."
He also said, "We buy hilsa weighing 400 grams from the trawlers at 300 Tk per kg while those with lesser weights are bought at Tk 200 to 250 per piece. The hilsa weighing 600 grams is sold at Tk 700 wholesale rate."
It was known that the hilsa price has come down at the town markets. The traders are selling per piece hilsa at Tk 40 to 50 more than the price at the landing station.
Fisherman Abu Siddik of Allahr Dan fishing trawler at Khurushkul Union in Sadar Upazila said, "During the hilsa season, pirate attack on fishermen increases. At least three trawlers came under their attack recently. If steps are not taken, the fishermen will face insecure in the sea."
Manager of Nuniarchhhara fish landing station Md Shafiqul Islam said, "With the increased netting of hilsa, the quantity of toll has also increased here. Though some mother hilsas are being netted, there is no jatka (hilsa fry) here. If anybody catches jatka, we will not spare them."
