About 50 girl students of Hatibandha Secondary School in Meherpur were admitted to a hospital on Tuesday after they panicked amid a 'mass hysteria'.

School sources said a student fell unconscious during the assembly at about 10am.

Later, some other students from class six to class ten went hysterical and were taken to Meherpur General Hospital.

Shafiqul Islam, head teacher of the school, said the school was declared closed to bring back normalcy. Many fell sick in the classroom while some on their way to home.

They reported symptoms of breathing problem and headache and one stage they fainted, he added.

Meherpur 250-bed hospital super Dr Mizanur rahman said some 50 students have been given first aid.

When anyone affected with the disease, it spreads rapidly to the adjacent ones.

There is nothing to be worried, said the doctor, adding that the situation could be back to normal through counseling.
