Farmers eye bumper onion yield in Kushtia

KUSHTIA, Mar 27: The local farmers are expecting bumper onion production this year due to favourable weather.
Besides, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), and different non-government organisations provided necessary agro-inputs to the farmers to achieve the production target, sources said.
On the other hand, the authority concerned arranged various short term training sessions for the farmers.
DAE sources said the farmers brought over 470 hectares of land under onion cultivation in all six upazilas of the district with the production target of 5,800 tonnes of onion this year.
Deputy Director of Kushtia DAE Kinkon Chowdhury said, "The crop is now growing rapidly here following the government's adoption of various steps and because of favourable weather condition."
He also hoped that harvesting will begin from next month if the weather favours.
An onion farmer Kolimuddin of Maligram Village under Khoksa Upazila said, "As the farmers got fewer prices of paddy and jute last year and as the foggy weather damaged Rabi crops, they began cultivating onion on more lands this year."
But, many farmers alleged that due to lack of proper-marketing policy, the middlemen or wholesalers are making extra profits depriving them of the fair price.
They urged the government to take proper steps for marketing onion for the sake of the farmers.
