SIRAJGANJ, Apr 13: People have become solvent through cultivating crops on the Jamuna riverbank char lands.
To protect the district town from the Jamuna River erosion, a town protection dam (hard point) at the cost of about Tk 450 crore was built on the riverbank in 1998. To make the hard point stronger, the Water Development Board (WDB) built four crossbars at the cost of Tk 251 crore, and the construction work started from 2014 and ended in 2017. Following the construction of the crossbars, thousands of acres of char lands emerged around the crossbars, which turned into permanent lands. As a result, the people who used to lead life as gypsies about 20 to 25 years ago have been living and growing various crops and vegetables on the emerged lands. Concerned sources said about 4,000 acres of lands have emerged around the no. 3 and the no. 4 crossbars. Of the total emerged lands, about 2,000 acres are arable where the local people have been growing various crops and vegetables.
As far as the eyes go, the vast char lands are found where various crops like paddy, wheat, mustard, tomato, maize, pulses, green chilli, and groundnut are being grown. By selling the produce, many local people have changed their lots. Farmer Abdus Sattar said, "We lost our houses and lands due to the Jamuna river erosion about 25 years ago. After this, we led lives like gypsies. But, after the crossbars were built, the new char lands emerged where we raised our houses and are cultivating the arable lands. Like us, about 2,000 families have found their destinations who are leading their lives well cultivating various crops and vegetables on the char lands."
Farmer Solaiman Ali said, "We are producing different crops and vegetables on the char lands and are getting optimum yield with less labour and cost. Many of us have changed their lots by selling the produce in town areas. I have cultivated various crops and vegetables on 10 bighas of lands."
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension in Sirajganj Md Arshed Ali said about 4,000 acres of lands have emerged following the construction of the crossbars where many people live. About 2,000 acres of lands are arable there where various crops and vegetables are being grown. The agriculture department is advising the farmers about the cultivation, and the farmers are getting profit by selling the produce in the town areas.
