MEHERPUR, Apr 17: The primary education system is hampered in Gangni Upazila of the district due to lack of proper monitoring.
It could not be possible to monitor properly due to lack of requisite manpower, claimed upazila education office.
It has been learnt there are 162 government primary, two non-government registered primary schools and six cluster offices in the upazila.
Only five upazila assistant education officers (UAEOs) are engaged in monitoring the schools under their own arrangement.
Different allegations have been found in the schools. The school time is from 9am to 4pm, but most of the teachers do not follow the time. They do not follow the teaching technique too, it was alleged.
It was found on 10 April at 9:45am at Rajarpara Hemayetpur Government Primary School that only three teachers were present instead of six including the head teacher. They were not on approved leave. Some 19 students of class one and two were present.
When asked about the teachers, Shahina, a teacher of the school expressed her nagging and questioned whether the journalists took prior permission to collect the news.
Hridoy, a student of class two at Kunjonagar Hudapra Government Primary School, was found to hoist the national flag on April 10 at 9:45am. Only six students were found present at that time.
On different pretexts, lion portion of the teachers do not go to school. On the other hand, they leave the school before the scheduled time.
Many teachers said many schools are being conducted by female teachers who come to the schools crossing 15 to 20 km road. Due to lack of vehicles in the rural areas, they come to school late and go out in advance. They opined that the problem might be reduced if the transfers and postings are made according to rules.
Some teachers who are closely associated with the teacher leaders are found regularly gossiping at tea-stalls located on the very nose of the education office.
Some guardians said, seeing the sorry state of the primary education, they are sending their children to kindergartens. Taking this advantage, nearly hundred kindergartens established in the upazila are not following the rules.
The teachers of secondary schools complained that the students who got admitted at class six do not know how to write their names properly. The students especially come from government primary schools located in rural areas.
General Secretary of a faction of Upazila Primary Teachers Association Majharul Islam said it is not possible to work for the welfare of the teachers staying at the school.
President of other group Hasanuzzamn echoed the same.
Gangni Upazila Education Officer Farukuddin said it is hardly possible to monitor the schools properly due to shortage of manpower. Only five UAEOs are visiting schools with their own arrangements. However, a few teachers were show-caused for negligence of duties.
