OIC CFM meets in Dhaka tomorrow

Representatives to visit Rohingya camps today

Bangladesh is set to hold the 45th sessions of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) tomorrow (Saturday).
The Muslim world's problems ranging from persecution of Rohingya community, conflicts, tension and instability in
Palestine and other Muslim countries will be the burning issues to be discussed in the two-day event in the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
In the event, scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh will be Chairman of the CFM for one year. Cote d'Ivoire is the incumbent Chairman of CFM now.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has intensified its campaign in support of its candidate for the post of OIC assistant secretary general for science and technology and planned to exploit the CFM meet for campaign, according to sources. The country nominated Kamrul Ahsal, secretary (bilateral and consular) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the OIC post.
This year, the CFM meet, theme is- "Islamic Values for Sustainable Peace, Solidarity and Development".
"Over 550 delegates from the 57 member states, observers, OIC-related organisations and different international bodies will attend the meeting. Of them, 40 are ministers and junior ministers," Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali briefed media at his Foreign Ministry office on Thursday.
The Rohingya crisis will get a special focus during the two-day meeting and a separate session on the issue will also be held, he said.
A high-profile delegation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is going to visit Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar today (Friday), just a day before beginning of the CFM meet, said Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
"Bangladesh will take the foreign ministers of the OIC member states to Rohingya camps on Friday to show them the plight of Myanmar nationals faced in the Rakhine State," the Minister said.
Besides, the problems of terrorism and violent extremism, sectarian tendencies, hatred, prejudice, Islamophobia, massive humanitarian crises with forced displacements from and to the Muslim countries, will also be discussed in the two-day event, according to sources.
Persistent poverty, the socio-economic backwardness of Muslim societies and protection of their rights and fundamental freedom will also get priority, according to the foreign ministry.
Bangladesh will be showcased as a new emerging nation on the world stage, Ali said.
Bangladesh joined the OIC in 1974 during its second summit in Lahore in Pakistan.
