KUSHTIA, May  13: Exceptional growth of the tender litchi in orchards amid favourable climatic condition predicts bumper production of the fruit this season in the district.
A silent revolution has taken place in litchi farming as hundreds of farmers have achieved self-reliance through farming of the most delicious, juicy and fleshy seasonal fruit in recent years everywhere in Kushtia.
The farmers have engaged their all-out efforts now in nursing the litchi trees in the orchards when formation of the tender fruits continues superbly after recent rainfalls as the harvest will begin from the next month.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 250 hectares of land brought under litchi cultivation this year with the target of 800 metric tonnes. Of the target, 150 hectares of land were cultivated at Mirpur Upazila against the production target of 400 metric tonnes.
A litchi grower of Khoksa told the reporter, "We are harvesting a bumper production of litchi because of a favourable weather condition."
DAE officials said, one of the leading litchi producing zones in the district, litchi is the main cash crop of the farmers of Mirpur Upazila.
Sources said, at least 50 villages of Kushtia are known for litchi cultivation. During the visit to the areas, this correspondent talked with the farmers who harvested a bumper production as well as fetched handsome price this season.
Meanwhile, the bigger litchi traders or their representatives from different parts of the country have started flocking to the area and bargaining with orchard owners to purchase the fruit in advance like in the previous seasons.
'There are 400 litchi trees in my orchard. Each small tree produced Tk 1,500 to 2,000 litchis this year though the production rate was very high than last year's. I am expecting to earn Tk 5 lakh from this orchard alone, Md Intaz Ali of Mirpur Upazilla said. A youth Sabbir Hossain said that he was unemployed, but now he is a prominent businessperson by cultivating litchi in the five years.
"Litchi farming gains popularity consistently everywhere in Kushtia now though quality litchis were being produced mainly in Dinajpur in the past," said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Kinkon Chakroboti.
