KUSHTIA, May 18: Exceptional growth of the tender jackfruits in orchards amid favourable weather predicts bumper production of the fruit this season in the district.
A silent revolution has taken place in jackfruit cultivation as hundreds of growers have achieved self-reliance through farming of the most delicious and juicy seasonal fruit in recent years everywhere in Kushtia.
Now the farmers have engaged all-out efforts in nursing the jackfruit trees in their orchards. The formation of the tender fruits continues superbly after recent rainfalls, and the harvest will begin from the next month.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a total of 200 hectares of land were brought under jackfruit cultivation this year with the target of 1,000 metric tonnes. Of the target, 100 ha of land were cultivated in Kumarkali Upazila against the production target of 500 metric tonnes.
Farmer Kazal Sheikh of Khoksa Upazila said a bumper jackfruit production is likely this year as the weather is favourable.
DAE officials said Kumarkhali Upazila is one of the leading jackfruit producing zones in the district where it is the cash crop for the farmers.
Sources said at least 50 villages of Kushtia are well-known for jackfruit cultivation. During a recent visit to the areas, this correspondent talked to the farmers who are hoping to get bumper production and fair price of jackfruit this season.
Meanwhile, the bigger jackfruit traders or their representatives from different parts of the country have started flocking to the areas and are bargaining with orchard owners to purchase the fruit in advance like in the previous years.
Farmer Md Jillu Miah of Kumarkali Upazila said, "I have 300 jackfruit trees in my orchard. Each small tree produced jackfruits worth about Tk 1,500 to 2,000 this year. I'm expecting to earn Tk 5 lakh from this orchard."
A youth Khairul Islam said he was unemployed but now he is a prominent businessperson by cultivating jackfruit for the last five years.
Jackfruit farming gained popularity everywhere in Kushtia, though quality jackfruits were being produced mainly in Jessore District in the past, said Horticulture Specialist of Kushtia DAE Binoy Krishna Debnath.
But, many farmers alleged that due to lack of proper marketing policy the middlemen or wholesalers are making extra profits depriving them of fair price.
They urged the government to take proper steps for marketing the fruit for the sake of the farmers.
