The government has completed all preparations to relocate 1, 00000 Rohingyas to Bhasanchar within two months under the Ashrayan-3 Project.
"As many as 1, 00000 Rohingyas who took shelter in Bangladesh amid persecution in Myanmar will be relocated to Bhasanchar of Hatiya Upazila in Noakhali within two months," Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Mohammad Shah Kamal said. He was addressing a programme at Balukhali Camp in Ukhia Upazila on Saturday.
Aid agencies and diplomats expressed concern over the relocation issue but the reality is aid agencies are struggling to accommodate the refugees at Cox's Bazar.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in a fresh assessment said 203,000 people are at the risk of falling victims to floods and landslides in the largest camp.
Bangladesh is set to rehabilitate Rohingya refugees at Bhasanchar as per the Prime Minister's directive. Chinese company Sinohydro is constructing a 13-kilometre flood defense embankment at a cost of $280 million to protect the Rohingyas from flood and cyclone. "All the preparations have been completed and the Rohingyas will be relocated there before August," Kamal said adding that Bangladesh navy has already built a helipad, jetty for naval vessels and rest rooms for navel officials there at Bhasan Char.
Bangladesh Navy and the Chinese construction firm Sinohydro are monitoring the work on construction site which includes land development and construction of the embankment.
Around 6,000 workers in 30 projects are working there day and night. The government on February 5 announced its plan to relocate thousands of Rohingyas Thengar Char in Hatiya in the Bay of Bengal and sought financial support from the UN and the international community for the relocation project as Myanmar government is yet to take any visible progress to take back Rohingyas. "To resolve Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh is now working in two ways: to find out a political solution to Rohingya issue in line with the Kofi Annan Commission report and continues to support the Rohingyas by providing them with humanitarian support in collaboration with the UN and International community," a Foreign Ministry official said.
Earlier, on February 19, 2018 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a press conference on February 19, 2018 said all Rohingyas would be relocated to Bhasan Char.
A total of 1,440 buildings will be built in the area to shelter Rohingya refugees. Each of the buildings will house 54 families. Each family unit will have a 12-by-14 sq-ft room.
