150 Education Centres At Ukhia Rohingya Camps

COX'S BAZAR, May 20: At least 150 child education centres were built at the temporary Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia Upazila of the district.
A private organisation Mukti took the initiative to build the education centres for Rohingya children with financial support of the UNICEF.
After visiting the camp, it was found that Mukti has been working with eight projects for lakhs of Rohingya people. It has been working for Rohingya women and children. The organisation has already got appreciation from the government and international donor organisations.
 It is engaged with different types of development works including earning, education, health, protection and sanitation.
Project Coordinator of Mukti Shantanu Shekhar Roy said according to the government direction, Bengali language teaching was banned at the Rohingya camps from April 2017. Mukti started their programme in 2016.
Programme Organiser Mohammad Shah Alam said Mukti has been teaching English, Burmese, Math and different skill development issues to the Rohingya children. It is providing "Early Learning" for the children aged 4 to 6, while "Basic Learning" for the children aged 7 to 14.
The education programme is being continued in three shifts. In every shift, 35 to 37 students attend the classes.
A total of 15,500 students are under the education programme. At least 300 male and female teachers are engaged in the programme. Of them, 150 are Bangladeshi and 150 are Burmese instructors. Besides, 327 employees and officials are working with the project.
While visiting several children teaching centres in Kutupalang Rohingya camp, this correspondent talked with a Bangladeshi teacher Aleya Begum.
Aleya said she works at Mukti and teaches English to the Rohingya children.
Burmese teacher Cholima of Koli-2 Centre said she has been teaching Burmese language to the Rohingya children for the last three months.
Technical Officer of Mukti Ahad Ali said they are running eight projects including education. The other projects are: Food, sanitation, health, female service centre, child protection, entertainment for minor children, and money for work.
While visiting "Bhorer Pakhi-1" Centre at Balukhali of Ukhia, this correspondent talked with a Rohingya child named Mohammad Rafiq, 7, of Tekibania of Mungdaw. He is a student of early learning section.
Rafiq said, "I taught 18 Burmese and 10 English rhymes at the centre. The teachers also tell us stories, teach how to draw and make flower, butterfly, birds and boats with paper. We never got the chance to learn it in Myanmar. I love to draw pictures, listening stories, dancing with the rhymes. The teachers do not scold us rather they love us."
Another student Sahera, 7, of early learning section came to Bangladesh from Nappura area of Mundaw. Her father's name is Mohammad Yunus. She is the second child of her parents. Her brother Ehsan also reads at the centre.
Sahera said she learnt exercise from the centre. She can draw fish, apple, mango, boats, flower, human face and trees. She can read and play. So she loves to come here. She likes skipping which is called "Faldani Khela" in the local language of Arakan state.
UNICEF Education Affairs Officer Sajedul Islam said the teaching centres are teaching many creative works to the children along with Burmese and English language. The issue of their physical fitness is being ensured by exercise.
"We are trying to give them a child-friendly environment," he also said.
