Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. is a Chinese multinational networking, telecommunications equipment, and Services Company headquartered in Shenzhen in China. It is the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world. Huawei is now one of the leading telecommunications equipment, and services company Bangladesh. CTO Jerry Wang's of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd talks to the Daily Observer.
DO: What are the key motivators behind Huawei's growth from a small company to a leading global ICT company?
JW: The first motivator is the level playing field brought by China's open market opportunities along with the fast development of the global telecom industry. The second one is our persistent investment in innovation. The third is the initiative to cooperate with western consulting firms to help improve our management and build a process-based operating system. Above all, the most important success factor is Huawei's core values, and the two most important core values are staying customer-centric and inspiring innovation.
DO: How does Huawei view the development of the cloud industry in a fully-connected era? How does Huawei position itself in this era?
JW: Our vision for the cloud ecosystem includes three core concepts.
First, growing the industry and enlarging the market. This is the only way if we hope to establish a broader technological ecosystem. We will establish more lasting connections with the outside world to support us in our business efforts which will eventually benefit everyone in the future.
Our second concept is that managing cooperation is more important than managing competition. We continue to adhere to our pipe strategy, and we do not compete with our partners for profit.
Benefit sharing is Huawei's third concept for shaping the cloud ecosystem. We share benefits with our customers and partners. To cultivate a strong ecosystem, we will bring all talent, capabilities, and resources together from all corners of the earth.
DO: What are Huawei's goals and strategies for smart devices?
JW: We aim to remain consumer-centric and become a top smart device brand preferred and trusted by consumers. We focus on network devices and smart devices, constantly increase our investment in research and innovation, and deeply integrate hardware, software, and application services (cloud). We will also reinforce our position in mobile broadband (MBB), and adopt a sound strategy to develop mid-range and high-end smartphones.
DO: What innovation concepts and mechanisms does Huawei adopt to manage innovation?
JW: We carry out R&D on a global scale, integrate our global intellectual resources, build competence centers with concentrated strategic resources, and openly innovate. We have set up research centers in Europe, USA and Japan to leverage the capabilities of our scientists and experts for innovation. We adopt a marathon-style approach to R&D investment. We carry out open innovation and cooperate extensively with universities, research institutes, and enterprises worldwide.
DO: How important will 5G be for carriers and vertical industries? Which industries will benefit from 5G?
JW: Existing 4G and 4.5G technologies can't support the huge numbers of connections (100 billion), ultra-low latency (1 ms), and ultra-high speeds (peak rate: 10 Gbit/s; average rate per user: 100 Mbit/s) of the future digital world. 5G will be required, with its revolutionary new technologies, new operating models, and new business models. Before the widespread adoption of 5G, a lot of innovative technologies will emerge, many of which can be deployed on existing 4G networks. This is what we call "4.5G". 4.5G will be a bridge between 4G and 5G that helps carriers to grow their business, supports new services, new devices, and new experiences, and paves the way for 5G. Industries which will be benefited from 5G are IoT, virtual reality, 3D movies, Cloud storage, Robotics, self-driving car, and many more. The ultra-low latency of 5G will connect every person and device into an integrated chain.
DO: What is the future plan of Huawei for Bangladesh market?
JW: In the carrier business, Huawei's mission is to help carriers gradually complete digital transformation, build ubiquitous networks that provide the best user experience, jointly build a digital ecosystem, and achieve business success and sustainable growth. We strive to become the best business partner for carrier customers.
In the enterprise business, we provide innovative, differentiated, and leading ICT hardware and software infrastructure products to build open, resilient, flexible, and secure platforms, establish new ecosystems featuring collaboration and shared success, and help customers address challenges from digital transformation and achieve business success.
In the device and consumer business, Huawei focuses on consumer experience, continuously achieves technological innovations, and develops quality products to become a top smart device brand preferred and trusted by consumers.
DO: Do you think the Bangladeshi market is flourishing and it has great potential?
JW: Of course. I have found that the local employees of Bangladesh are very talented. We are trying to sharpen their skills by providing them training. We also invite a number of these talented students to China for advanced training. We want to take active part in helping both the public and private sectors of Bangladesh for realizing its dream of building "Digital Bangladesh".
DO: We have covered a lot of ground. Do you want to add anything else?
JW: Yes, I would like to thanks Daily Observer on behalf of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd. to give opportunity of an open discussion. I think those were really interesting questions. I also want to tell the people through the media  that we grew up together with the local market and the local people. We will continue to do so. Also, we will keep upholding our tradition of putting our customer in the centre, no matter how big or successful we are, through good and bad times. We value our partners. We will work together with our local partners for the success of the ICT sector.
