Bangladeshi-born Doly Begum elected MPP in Canada

Bangladeshi-born Doly Begum has been elected a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) from Ontario of Canada.

The voting was held on Thursday.

Doly is the first Bangladeshi-origin person who became a parliamentarian in Canada.

According to Toronto Star, New Democratic Party candidate Doly Begum bagged 16,942 votes while her nearest rival PC candidate Gary Ellis got 11,671 votes.

Liberal incumbent Lorenzo Berardinetti has represented the riding at Queen’s Park for the past 15 years. Berardinetti finished a distant third with 8,215 votes,

Doly, who was the chief coordinator of the province-wide Keep Hydro Public campaign, served as co-chair of the Scarborough Health Coalition and vice-chair of the Warden Woods Community Centre.

She went to Canada as at the age of 11with her parents and younger brother from Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh and has lived in Scarborough most of her life.
