KUSHTIA, June 12: The handicraft workers across the district have been passing busy days to meet the huge demand ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims.
The weavers will not get any holiday till the festival is over.
Sellers of over 200 large wholesale shops at Kumerkhali Kaporer Haat and Poradha Kaporer Haat are also busy as the traders from different parts of the country have already started thronging there to buy clothes.
The areas famous for weaving industry are located in Kumerkhali, Khoksa and Sadar upazilas of the district.
Now, 3.5 lakh looms are operating in two upazilas of the district with the target to produce two crore pieces of handloom clothes. At least 70 per cent of the country's demand for handloom clothes is met from the zone, said Ansar Pramanik, president of Bangladesh Handloom and Power Loom Owners Association, Kumerkhali unit.
Around 50 per cent of the total production of the district is exported to India and the demand soars up ahead of Eid, Pramanik added.
Sokor Ali, a weaver of Khoksa told this correspondent that most of the weavers of the area work round the clock in producing the traditional tant sari.
The weavers are producing to meet the demands of the buyers. More than thousand pieces of Kumerkhali saris are being sold in different parts of Bangladesh and also exported to India, which has created an extra load on the weavers.
Kumerkhali saris and bed-sheets are famous at home and abroad.
A weaver Kolimoddin, 37, said to this correspondent, "We are now passing busy days ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. The price of lungi and sari were not bad considering national and Indian market. Most of the young girls and newly married women are more interested to buy Kumerkhali saris rather Indian saris."
A weaver Abdur Rouf said, "The weavers got huge orders from Chittagong and Sylhet this year. The saris are being sold in huge quantity in many districts of the country and Kolkata in India."
But, due to crisis of workers, supply of saris against the orders may not be possible.
It is gathered that Zamdani, soft silk, half silk, Dhotori, Dengu, Resham, Tosor, Baluchuri, Fortly, Gas Silk and various qualities of cotton saris are being produced here and sent to the showrooms of various districts.
Weavers produce cotton net sari which is being sold at Tk 2,750 per piece, Cheap Jute Katan at Tk 7,350, Madraji Cotton Tant Benaroshi at Tk 2,150, ND Silk at Tk 2,950, Contact Kuchi Ball Half Silk at 3,150, Net Jute Silk at Tk 6,000 to 10,000, Jute Katan Silk at Tk 3,850, Half Silk at Tk 3,000 to 15,000, and Three Colour Gas Silk at Tk 3,350.
A weaver Lalu Mia said most of the weavers have not sufficient capital to run their business. They cannot buy raw materials due to an increase in their prices. So, most of them are giving up their profession. Most of the marginal weavers of the district are suffering due to the fund crisis in the peak production season.
"I have three looms. My son and I work in two looms while the other has remained abandoned. I do not engage worker due to fund crisis," said Akul Uddin, a marginal weaver of Ambaria in Khoksa Upazila.
"I have targeted to produce 100 pieces of saris in my two looms. But to start the work, I had to borrow from a moneylender on condition of giving him 60 pieces of saris without making any profit," said another weaver Raihan.
Around 15 thousand marginal weavers of the district are facing similar problems. They said, the government should provide financial support to the marginal weavers for upholding the historic image of Kumerkhali saris at home and abroad and earn foreign currency from this sector.
