NATORE, June 25: The authority of the Natore Sugar Mills has not given salaries to its workers and employees for the last three months, it was alleged.
As a result, about 650 workers and employees of the mills are leading their lives amid economic hardship.
According to sources at the mills, the authority realises the matter but it cannot do anything because traders are not buying sugar regularly from the mills.
The mills authority usually pay salaries to their workers and employees by realising money from sugar sale to the traders. But the traders have not been buying sugar from the mills for long because of 'loss' in their business.
As a result, a huge quantity of sugar has been lying unsold in the mills godown for long. For this reason, the mills fell into financial crisis, the officials said. At present, about seven thousand tons of sugar is in stock of the mills.
Following the matter, workers and employees of the mills organised a demonstration in front of the mills gate on Sunday. During this time, they blamed the authorities for this situation and demanded immediate arrangement for regular payment of their monthly salaries and allowances.
In this connection, Babor Ali, an employee of the mills' power house, said he has not been getting salaries for three months. The authority told him that there is no money in the fund, and they advised him to take his salary by selling sugar in the market.
Abu Taleb a boiler house worker of the mills, said  he is now running his family by taking loan from others.
Saheb Ali, a senior clerk of the Accounts Department, said the authority has not given him  overtime wage, arrear salary, house rent and others for long. He said, ''We'll not receive salary in exchange of sugar selling commission from the traders."
Saiful Islam, General Secretary of the Labour Union, said, there are 650 workers and employees in the mills. They have legal rights to get salaries from the mills as against their service. Under this situation, he requested the government to come forward to solve the problem immediately.
While Acting President of the Union Shariful Islam said the same words about the situation.
Managing Director Shahid Ullah admitted the existing financial crisis of the mills. He said, they have paid salary for the month of February and March last to the employees by selling produced sugar of the mills. The sugar traders are not willing to buy sugar following the government rate Taka 50 per KG. So sugar remained unsold, and that is why they cannot give salaries properly. Under this situation, he wanted co-operation from workers, employees and the government to solve the crisis.
