MEHERPUR, June 27: The local jute farmers are frustrated for price fall of jute for the last two years.
The target of jute cultivation was not achieved in the immediate past season. Nearly two lakh maunds of jute have been lying unsold in stores and farmers' houses for long.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), some 25,000 hectares of land were brought under jute farming last year, and this year 20,000 ha against the target 23,000 ha have been brought.
Zahiduzzaman of Amjhupi Village under Sadar Upazila said, "I did not cultivate jute in the immediate past season because I had suffered loss of Tk 15,000 after cultivating jute on one and a half bighas of land last season. At that time I sold jute at Tk 1,200 per maund. If I could sell the jute at Tk 2,000 per maund, I could make much profit."
Akbar Ali of Rashikpur Village in Mujibnagar Upazila said, "I used to cultivate jute on one acre of land every year, but I did not cultivate the same in the immediate past season. I suffered loss for the last three years. So, I cultivated paddy, maize and other crops with the expectation of recouping losses caused by the jute farming."
Moktar Hossen of Malshadah under Gangni Upazila said, "I cultivated jute on 16 decimals of land for using the yield as household object."
According to farmers, they are pleased getting fair price of paddy for the last two years. Besides, they earned more by cultivating vegetables and maize. For which the local farmers turned their eyes to alternative crop cultivation instead of jute because excessive expenditure and labour are required for jute cultivation. Now they are cultivating jute on small scale.
Eminent jute trader Hajji Alfazuddin of Gangni Upazila said raw jute is not being exported abroad for long. On the other hand, the jute exporters are not purchasing jute. Now, more than two lakh maunds of jute worth about Tk 30 crore have been lying unsold in the local godowns. Recently, its price has increased from Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,600.
In order to recoup the losses of 2016, the traders with good expectation had purchased jute in 2017. But, there are no buyers in the market and in the meantime the price fell.
The government made it mandatory to pack 17 agricultural products measuring 20 kg and above in jute bag. But, of the products only rice and potato are being packed in jute bag and others in plastic bags. No fruitful result has been found after conducting mobile courts.
As a result, negative impacts have been found in the jute market as all other commodities like rice, garlic and ginger are being imported in plastic bags.
Deputy Director of the DAE Dr Akhtaruzzaman told The Daily Observer that the farmers were advised to cultivate Aus paddy to recover the losses from jute cultivation. He claimed that the paddy cultivation has increased in the district.
