Rohingya Repatriation

PM to seek ‘extra’ support from UN top boss

Published : Sunday, 1 July, 2018 at 12:00 AM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will seek "extra" support from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in expediting the repatriation process of one million Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh. Guterres is now in Dhaka with World Bank Chief Group President Jim Yong Kim. "From our side we want to share some ideas with the UN top boss keeping rainy season in our mind. We need huge money to address the present crisis in Rohingya camps. We also wants to share our plan with them," a senior official of the Foreign Ministry told the daily Observer on Saturday.

Meanwhile, UN plans to kick of the medium-term planning for the refugee situation and to reiterate the UN and the World Bank's support for     finding comprehensive solutions to the situation of the Rohingya people, he added. Following a huge pressure from the international community, especially the UN, on January 16, 2018  Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a document on 'Physical Arrangement' which will facilitate return of Rohingays to their homeland but it failed to make a "citizenship" of Rohingyas as per Myanmar requirements.

As per signed agreements between the two countries, the repatriation process will start by Jan 23. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim will visit Rohingya camps tomorrow to oversee the situation on ground.  The repatriation of Rohingya Muslim refugees to Myanmar has been delayed as the process of compiling and verifying the list of people to be sent back is incomplete but it could start from the first week of February, a Foreign Ministry's senior official told the Daily Observer.

Prime Minister will sit with the UN Secretary-General and the World Bank President at 11 am at PMO, "they will review the situation of the newly arrived Rohingyas in Bangladesh and assess progress towards a safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees in line with international standards," another official said. "Sheikh Hasina also sought UN cooperation in implementing the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar over the Rohingya repartition. Some 700,000 Rohingya crossed the Bangladesh border from Myanmar's Rakhine state since August 25 last year," he added.
Access to food, healthcare, education and the necessities of life has been difficult for everyone, there so we need more cooperation from the international community, the official added.
