According to Lao Tzu, "A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.'' In our busy life, we hardly get any free time to go anywhere for our recreation or to explore the beauty of nature. Therefore, if we can plan a sudden tour, then probably we can snatch a holiday opportunity. During the Eid vacation, I, along with some of my friends who are members of archaeology Adventure club, arranged a daylong tour to the largest haor of Asia-- Hakaluki Haor.
The word 'haor' is acquainted form of the Sanskrit word Sagar which means sea. The biggest haor of Asia is situated in the eastern part of Bangladesh, adjacent to the Assam-Bangladesh border.
This haor's total area includes five upazillas from three districts namely Kulaura, Jhuri, and Baralekha. However, currently they are under the Moulvibazar district of Sylhet, while the others two upazillas are Fenchuganj and Golapgang. It involves a large surface area of about 181.15 km. There are more than 238 small, medium, and large interconnecting rivers, some of which are perennial and others are seasonal.
During the dry season, approximately 4,4000 ha are covered by the river, but with the onset of the rains in the summer, the entire area floods to about four and half times of this size (18,383 ha) and remains under water for the next five months. During this period, all the rivers are united as one large lake, or haor, making Hakaluki Haor the largest freshwater wetland in Bangladesh.
Coming back to our journey, we went to Komilla railway station to bore the Sylhet Paharika express train. The train hugely crowd due to Eid holiday. After 6 hours in the early morning, we finally arrived at our destination. The first blow of fresh morning air took away our tiredness in an instant. Our club member Mohammad Kalam came to the railway station to join us. We had breakfast near the station where Kalam was elected as the guide and manager of our tour. Without wasting any more time, we decided to set off for an adventurous encounter with beautiful nature and explore water diversity in Bangladesh.
We rented a CNG from Kulaura railway station to Vukshimail village. After an hour, we reached near the plenteous beauty and pompous biodiversity at Hakaluki Haor. We had to hire a boat for the full day. After a while, we got bored on boat and started swimming. Thw water, gliding over our shoulders as he flapped our arms to move forward was an amazing experience. The moment was unforgettable.
Next, we went to visit Rakhal Shah's Dargah, locally it was known as a saint's rest place, which is situated in the middle of the haor. Folklores tell that there was once a shepherd saint whose cow did not destroy the crops. They also say that the saint went to mosque by walking more than 1 km, 5 times a day for prayers.
After exploring this place, we returned to the mainland for lunch. We ate four different kinds of fresh fishes and vegetables. The food was delicious. After lunch, took a little nap and came back to haor again. With the sun kissing the horizon, the lazy afternoon winds and the tides dancing on the tunes of breezes, the place becomes a luxury paradise. The red sun drowning along the river line bid farewell to us and promised to see us again tomorrow.
That was the end to our trip. Time was ticking and we had to reach the Kulaura railway station before our train left the platform. However, this one day has revived life within my soul, freeing me from my boring and monotonous life. So if you are one who loves the nature, don't forget to visit Hakaluki during your next holiday!
