Three sensational cases filed for killing the journalist couple Sagar-Runi, Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a student of Cumilla Victoria College, and Mahmuda Akter Mitu, wife of former police officer Babul Akter, have virtually seen no progress.
The only significant progress of the journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi murder case is that the RAB has submitted petitions for 58th times seeking time extension to submit a progress report over the last six years.
Investigators have failed to recover two laptops of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi killed in their bedroom on February 11, 2012 in the capital.
The DNA report on the suspected killers of Sohagi Jahan Tonu killed in Cumilla 28 months back is yet to be submitted.
Tonu was a second-year History student at Cumilla Victoria College.
She was an active member of Victoria College Theatre and also worked as a private tutor. She was found dead in a wooded part of the Cumilla Mainamati Cantonment
on March 20, 2016 after she failed to return home from one of her private tuition classes.
Police have failed to charge anyone in court over the murder of Mahmuda Akter Mitu, wife of former police officer Babul Akter, even though two years have elapsed.
Mitu was hacked and shot dead near GEC intersection in the port city early in the morning on June 5, 2016, when she was taking her son to school, a few days after Babul had joined Police Headquarters in Dhaka following promotion and transfer.
On April 18 in 2012, the High Court ordered RAB to investigate and submit report on the case of the journalist couple Sagar-Runi as police and detectives failed to show any progress.
A total of eight people were arrested in connection with the sensational killing that sent shockwaves across the country.
Tonu murder sparked a huge public outcry and people from home and abroad demanded justice. Although 28 months have passed since the murder of Tonu the investigation into the gruesome killing is yet to see any headway.
Family members and locals expressed their anger and frustration as police have even failed to name any suspect.
Investigators say the charge-sheet of Mitu muder case was at the 'final stage' of drafting but could not confirm when they would submit it to the court.
"Some works are yet to be done. So I can't say when we'll submit it," said detective Md Kamruzzaman, who is investigating the case.
Kamruzzaman, an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chatttogram Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch, however, added that they would file the charge-sheet 'shortly'.
Mitu's family first took the side of Babul after her murder but later suspected that the former police officer might have links to the murder.
Babul, a decorated superintendent of police, hailed for his role in anti-terrorism drives in Chattogram, was also questioned by the investigators.
He accused unidentified people in the case filed with the Panchlaish Police Station over the murder.
It had initially been suspected that Babul's actions against militants led to the murder of Mitu but the investigation took a sharp turn when her family pointed finger at Babul.
Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain, a former police inspector, believes Babul was involved in the murder of his daughter.
"Babul's superiors quizzed him and fired him when he admitted his involvement in Mitu's killing," he said.
Two days later, police said they had arrested two people - Md Anwar and Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim - in connection with the killing.   Citing statements given by the duo, the law enforcers said one Kamrul Islam Shikder Musa was the mastermind.
Police said besides Musa, Wasim, Nabi, and Kalu took part in the killing mission directly while Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, who had worked as an informer of Babul, supplied the gun used in the murder.
Police arrested Bhola and one of his associates Monir in the port city. They also claimed to have recovered the pistol used in the murder.
After Bhola secured bail from the High Court recently, police showed him arrested in another murder case.
Nurul Islam Rashed and Nurunnabi, two other suspects named by the arrested ones, were killed in so-called gunfights with the law enforcers. One Md Shahjahan has also been arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of Mitu.
