4 awarded life term in panel mayor murder case

A court in Meherpur on Monday convicted four persons and awarded them life term imprisonment in a case filed for the killing of Meherpur Municipality panel mayor Mizanur Rahman Ripon.  

The lifers are : Akali Mia, Abdul Halim, Laltu Miah and Masud Rana. Akali Mia and Abdul Halim are non in jail while rest two are at large.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Nurul Islam handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom.  

According to prosecution, Meherpur Municipality panel mayor and Ward 1 commissioner Mizanur Rahman Ripon received bomb injuries on April 1, 2011 evening when he was working at his business centre at Hotel Bazaar in the district town. He breathed his last at a hospital in Dhaka on April 8.
His father lodged murder case against some Awami League leaders and former Municipality mayor Mutasim Billah Motu.

CID investigated the case and submitted charge sheet dropping the names of Awami League leaders and former Mayor.

Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Kazi Shahidul Haque of Meherpur Judges Court confirmed the verdict.
