SIRAJGANJ, Sept 23: Hundreds of people are suffering due to unchanged flood situation in the district.
Ayesha Siddika of Char Puthiabari Village in Sadar Upazila gave birth to a baby several days back who was named Mim. As water entered the house, she is sitting on a high bed along with her baby. Her husband Monir went out along with his rickshaw.
After two days of Mim's birth, water in the Jamuna River started to increase. Their house was inundated five days back. Thousands of people in char areas of the district are facing the similar problem.
According to sources concerned,  the flood situation has remained unchanged in the district. Though water level didn't increase in the last two days, the water is flowing just 3 centimetres below danger level. People's plight has not decreased as croplands, roads and other areas in 22 unions of six upazilas are still under water. The flood-hit people are staying on highlands and embankments.
Sources said due to rise in water, the char and low-lying areas in Natuapara, Tekany, Khasrajbari, Chargirish, Maijbari and Nischintapur of Kazipur Upazila, Khoksabari, Gunergati, Puthiabari and Char Puthiabari of Sadar Upazila, Rajapur of Belkuchi Upazila, Bagutia, Sodia, Chandpur, Khas Kaulia and Omarpur of Chouhali Upazila, and Koijuri and Potazia of Shahzadpur Upazila have been flooded.
Though the flood is not formidable, people of the affected areas are suffering much. As the roads have gone under water, they are using boat and raft for communication. Besides, hundreds of bighas of croplands with the plants Transplanted Aman paddies and winter vegetables have been flooded. As a result, farmers have incurred huge losses.
Agriculture Department sources said if the water doesn't increase and recedes within a week, the crops will not be damaged.
Meanwhile, the affected people sought help to the government before the flood becomes serious.
Some local people of Char Puthiabari in Sadar Upazila- Roshena, Farida and Marzina Khatun said after water entered their houses one week ago, they took shelter on dyke. They said they are yet to get any government help. Their main problem is lack of drinking water and sanitation.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Md Arshed Ali said the water has been rising for last two weeks but it increased much in last week. Various crops on about 1,100 hectares of land have gone under water. But, if the water recedes within a week, the crops will not be damaged.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Abdur Rahim said, "It isn't flood but a bit rise in water at char and low-lying areas. We are preparing a list of the victims. We have all preparations to combat large scale flood."
