5 BNP activists get 10 years’ RI

The Speedy Trial Tribunal in Rajshahi has awarded five BNP leaders 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed for vandalism, arson attack and bomb blasts in the residence of Golam Rabbani MP from Chapainawabganj-1 during the 10th national election.

Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon in presence of the convicts, said public prosecutor Antajul Haque Babu.

The tribunal also fined them Tk 10,000 each. In default, the convicts will have to serve one year more in jail.

Meanwhile, 14 accused in the case were acquitted.

The convicts are : Chapainawabganj’s Kansat union BNP executive committee member Setaur Rahman, Shariful Islam, organizing secretary Rabiul Islam alias Tutul and Kansat Chhatra Dal leaders Mrinal Hossain and Yasir Arafat.

Accoeding to the prosecution, Awami League nominee MP Golam Rabbani’s house came under attack on December 2, 2013, the last day of submission of nomination papers for the 10th parliamentary elections. The BNP men torched and vandalised the house in Panchuria area of Kansat.
 
Shibganj police SI Israil filed a case with Terrorism and Explosives Act after the incident.
