RAJSHAHI, Dec 30: Due to random roaming of stray dogs, road accidents have increased in the district. Several accidents have happened in the last one month due to collision between dogs and motorcycles.
On Thursday last, Railway Srameek League leader Mohsin Ali and City Swechchhasebak League Organising Secretary Atikur Rahman were campaigning at Court Station intersection when their motorcycle collided with some stray dogs.
As a result, they fell from the bike, and one hand of Mohsin Ali was broken and he got serious injury in head while one hand of Atikur Rahman was also broken. On Thursday night, reporter of My TV Shahriar Antu was returning home from Saheb Bazaar on his motorbike when he was seriously injured following a collision between his bike and some stray dogs at Ghoshpara intersection.
In this way, the motorcyclists are facing accidents for stray dogs. City dwellers alleged the stray dog menace has increased in the city. Not only motorcyclists, the passers-by especially the children are also facing the menace. The people have urged the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) authority to remove the menace. Seeking anonymity, an official of RCC said, "Earlier we killed dogs, but now we are using birth control medicines to solve the menace. There is an order that animals can't be killed. So, we are planning to start the birth control system again."
Acting District Livestock Officer Dr Julfikar Akhter Hossen said, "If RCC wants, we can take steps to control the dogs. But, there is a problem that the vaccine has to be stored in -20 degrees Celsius. We don't have the system to store the vaccine." As per a survey two years back, there are about 12 lakh dogs in the country, and most of those are stray. As the dog killing drive has remained stopped, so the number of dogs is increasing in the Rajshahi City. About three to four lakh people are bitten by stray dogs every year in the country.
