Awami League (AL) advisory committee member Tofail Ahmed said Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) would lead the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) through winning in the upcoming polls scheduled for March 11.

He came with the remarks while speaking at a rally organized by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka University (DU) campus on Saturday marking its 71th founding anniversary.

BCL brought out a colourful procession after finishing the rally. While the rally marched towards High Court intersection, a factional clash occurred near Doel Chattar over crossing each other which left at least five activists injured.

The injured-- Aminul Islam, Azizul Haque, Tushar, Nayon and Azim--are activists of different hall units of DU.

Of the injured, Aminul Islam who sustained head injury was undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), while rest others took primary treatment there.

Witnesses said a scuffle broke out between BCL activists of Jagannath hall unit of DU and Dhaka College unit when a rally, brought out marking the 71-founding anniversary of the organisation, reached near the Dhaka gate area.

Both the groups tried to cross each other and at one stage, the BCL men started throwing brickbats at each other.

Later, BCL activists of Surja Sen hall and Salimullah Muslim hall joined the Jagannath hall unit and chased the Dhaka College BCL men towards High Court intersection, said the witnesses.

The BCL men also allegedly obstructed journalists from taking photos of their scuffle.
President and general sectary of BCL could not be reached over phone.

In his speech, Tofail Ahmed expressed his hope that Chhatra League will win the upcoming DUCSU polls.

“I believe, consensus among the BCL leadership would help the organisation to claim victory in the upcoming DUCSDU election,” he said.

Among others, AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former presidents Saifur Rahman Shohag, Liakat Shikder, Bahadur Bepari also attended the programme, presided over by incumbent president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon.

Many leaders and activists of DU BCL also expressed their anger as the president and general secretary of DU unit were not given chance to speak at the program.

BCL was founded on January 4, 1948. They declared two week long programme scheduled to observe the day on January 4, but after the sudden death of Awami League (AL) presidium member Sayed Ashraf, they postponed their all scheduled programmes.
