DNCC by-election

AL’s Atiqul takes lead in 70 centres

Awami League nominated candidate Atiqul Islam secured 46,280 votes in unofficial result of 70 centers in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election while his nearest rival Singer Shafin Ahmed, Jatiya Party nominated candidate, bagged 1,840 votes.

Voting in the by-election for the mayoral post of DNCC and in 36 wards of Dhaka north and south city corporations (DSCC) ended on Thursday evening.

The balloting which began around 8am with low voter turnout due to rain ended around 4pm without any break.

Five candidates vyed for the mayoral post, while 116 contenders for 18 general councillor posts and 45 aspirants fought for six reserved seats which are exclusively for women. Of them, one general councillor candidate was elected unopposed in the city.
