The 49th Independence and National Day was celebrated in the country on Tuesday, refreshing the pledge to uphold the spirit of the War of Liberation and build Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. BARISHAL: On the occasion, different political parties and socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the martyrs' monument. Barishal Reporters' Unity honoured four freedom fighters, arranged a children's art competition and an exhibition of Liberation War documents and materials. Barishal Press Club arranged a discussion meeting and a sweetmeat distribution among journalists. In the morning, a march past and a physical display by the students of different educational institutions were held at Bangabandhu Uddyan. Divisional Commissioner Ram Chandra Das took salute as chief guest. Other programmes included decorating buildings with lights, special prayers at religious institutions, special dish at hospitals, jail and orphanage, discussion meetings, and cultural function. BHOLA: To mark the day, former commerce minister and lawmaker of Bhola-1 Constituency Tofayel Ahmed hoisted national flag at Gaznabi Stadium in the town in the morning. At that time, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Masud Alam Siddiqi, and Police Super (SP) Md Mokter Hossen were also present. National flags were hoisted atop all public and private buildings in the town. A discussion meeting was held at local Town Hall with DC Gopal Chandra Dash in the chair while lawmaker of Chuadanga-1 Constituency Solaiman Haque Joarder Selun was present as chief guest. Among others, SP Mahbubur Rahman, Additional DC Farhad Hossen, Chuadanga Municipality Mayor Obaidur Rahman Chowdhury, and Sadar Upazila Chairman Asadul Haque Biswas were also present and spoke on the occasion. The speakers including chief guest urged all to work together to build Bangabandhu's 'Sonar Bangla'. They also said the government should complete the trial of war criminals and execute of judgment of the court as soon as possible. CUMILLA: On the occasion, local lawmaker AKM Bahauddin Bahar, lawmaker of women's reserved seat Anjum Sultana Sima, DC Md Abul Fazal Mir, and SP Syed Nurul Islam placed wreaths at the central Shaheed Minar on city's Town Hall ground in the morning. Besides, different political parties and socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the same place. A march past was held at Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium. Besides, freedom fighters were accorded reception on DC's house premises. FENI: On the occasion, Sonagazi Samity, Dhaka organised a free medical camp on Bishnupur High School ground in Sonagazi Upazila on Tuesday morning where about 5,000 patients received treatment and medicines for free. Vice President of the Samity Nazmul Karim Dulal presided over the programme while President of the Samity and lawmaker of Feni-3 Constituency Lt General (Retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury was chief guest. General Secretary of the Samity Engineer Aminur Rashid Chowdhury Masud inaugurated the programme. Later, the guests inaugurated the newly-building of Bishnupur High School. JAMALPUR: District Administration, political parties, educational institutions and various socio-cultural organisations arranged various programmes to mark the day.
