At present time in Bangladesh, the young boys and girls between 18 to 35 year are almost 5 crore in numbers. But the matter of wonder that most of them are unemployed and it is more horrible that the number is increasing day by day.
Although Bangladesh is a small country, it is overpopulated. Most of the people are not asset for the country, rather they are burden. In this case, we cannot blame them for their situation. Many of them are searching work but they are forlorn in spite of their trying.
As we look closely to every sector of the country, our eyes and mind can catch so many flaws. Why a great number of the youth of the country is not able to get work? Why they are neglected despite their having qualification? Have we enough jobs according to our needs?
Although Bangladesh is developing in the economic sector, unemployment problem has become a challenge for the country. As a number of people is entering in the job sector, besides, a number of people is also becoming unemployed. As a result, there seems discrimination.
As population is growing up day to day, the number of jobs is not increasing proportionately. So, every year the unemployed person is growing up. Because of corruption in the job field, people are being unable to get their expected job. Favoritism is very common in the most job sectors. Jobs are occupied by disqualified people in place of qualified people. Therefore, the number of educated unemployed is rising.
Besides agriculture, industry section is another multiple job sector in Bangladesh. Mills, factories and garments are huge in numbers. But because of proper schemes and managements, people are not being employed aptly.
According to the definition of International Labor Organization (ILO), when someone above 15 years aged does not get to work at least one hour in a week, then he or she will be called unemployed. Bangladesh also takes this definition. Consequently, the number of unemployed people of Bangladesh is totally different from the real scene.
In accordance with Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), there are 26 lack 77 thousand unemployed people in Bangladesh. And 10 lack 43 thousand are educated from them. But reality says different thing. The number of unemployed people is really more than the stated amount. Only the wage of one-hour work in a week is not enough wage to lead a family even an individual person, is it? Then, although anyone above 15 works for sometimes, they should be called unemployed. The definition of ILO is not workable in the case of Bangladesh. From this point, in Bangladesh, the real numbers of unemployed people are almost 5 crores. almost 11 crores people of Bangladesh are able to work where 6 crores are now engaged in work.
Every year in Bangladesh, almost 2 lack people need jobs but there have almost 1 lack 30 thousand sits for them. As a result, every year many people are being unemployed. Consequent upon ILO, it is totally matter of sorrow that most of unemployed people are highly educated. Then, a question generally arises here, what is the benefit of education if the educated men become unemployed? Although we cannot avoid their faults entirely but in one case is not it the failure of the govt. to engage them for the benefaction of the country?
So, it is an important fact that higher education cannot give surety of getting job. Rather it clears that, the more you read, the more you take risk to be an unemployed. At least, various reports and statistics tell it. ILO's statistic expresses that Bangladesh is in the second position in the rate of highly educated unemployed people in Asia and Pacific Area that rate is 10.7%.
Actually, the rate of unemployed people in Bangladesh is 14.2%. The rate is raised mostly in the last 7/8 years. If the rate of employment can be increased by 2% per year, the rate of economic growth will be increased. Then the number of unemployed people may have decreased.
Now, there is no way to hide the real circumstance that, unemployment problem is a difficult challenge for the govt. to face. To reduce the number of unemployed people, many plans and managements should be taken.
The current education system has to be well mechanized with various changes. Our students should not be engaged only with the study rather they should participate in extra curriculum activities and do various innovative works. They should take exertion by doing different things so that they can create employment.
Moreover, in every job sector, govt. has to be concentrated to ensure clarity, explanation and responsibility. Corruption must be checked in job recruitments. Qualification should be observed accurately.
