Magnanimity and its cruel price!

A reputed physician turned member of BNP's 'think tank; Dr. Jafarullah Chowdhury never claims that he is an active member of BNP. But his belief in BNP's politics is unflinching and he owns BNP for all intents and purposes from the core of his heart. On occasion, he sincerely admits that his advice is not duly heeded by BNP hierarchy.

He is a founding trustee of GonoShastya Kendra that has earned iconic fame & repute in making health services available to poor's and marginalized people in Bangladesh. As an individual, Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury is a good human being and commands respect of many people in Bangladesh for his contribution in GonoShastya Kendra despite his political philosophy and stands in polities in Bangladesh demand critical scrutiny. He often graces the occasion, these days, as a TV talk-show host where he disseminates his political ideas and thoughts in his own hilarious style and deliberations of words and dictions in his unique facade with Miltonictonsorial.

As a freedom fighter, Dr Chowdhury owns the spirit of our great Liberation War and in that vein; it is to believe that there is no place for anti-liberation forces and their abettors in his mind.

As a protagonist believing in the rule of law, often he discovers flaws in our justice system particularly in lower judiciary which, according to him, is controlled by the government. On Begum Khaleda Zia's trial and conviction on corruption cases he is of opinion that Begum Zia has been convicted unjustifiably on personal vengeance based on concocted corruption allegations against her. Dr. Chowdhury is of, further, opinion that Begum Zia should get bail and face legal procedures in due course of law.

In TV talk-show Dr Chowdhury sometime expresses his unfettered praise and adulation for honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her noble works leading Bangladesh to the height of grace and grandeur. On several occasions in TV talk-show, Dr Chowdhury emphasized that honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already excelled her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in all counts except in magnanimity that the Bangabandhu was well known for.

Magnanimity is the virtue of being great of mind and heart. It encompasses, usually, a refuses to be petty, a willingness to face danger, and an actions for noble purposes. In Bangabandhu's trait all the features of magnanimity were present. He was kind and magnanimous not only to his close party people, but was also magnanimous to his political rivals. He believed in his life that, no Bengalis could do any harm to him and never cared for safety and security of his life.

Despite he was cautioned by the world leaders including Cuban president Fidel Castro to be more careful about his personal security, Bangabandhu was defiant and used to live in his Dhanmondi residence virtually unguarded. That was because of his faith in his people which made him great and magnanimous. Bangabandhu was right in his belief and conviction that no Bengalis could do any harm to him, and he was not equally right that any Bengali could be of any danger to him. His enemies were waiting in the blind alleys to spill his blood and succeeded to murder him alongside with all other members of his family except two daughters on the fateful night of 15th August 1975. Bangabandhu had to pay a great price by his life for being magnanimous.

Magnanimity is a great human virtue and can be showered to only good human being. Monsters and demons in human shape do not deserve it. Despite he was cautioned, Bangbabandhu was not careful about his enemies who waited in disguise to take his life. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with her bleeding heart, watched how her father and her family members were brutally massacred because of fact that Bangabandhu was magnanimous to his enemies in disguise. Therefore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina does not need to be that magnanimous as has been prescribed by Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury to be, to her rivals (read enemies) who had attempted to eliminate her and his party by a monstrous grenade attack on 21st August 2004 in Dhaka.

Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury further suggested setting Khalada Zia free on bail so that Dr Chowdhury alongside with his associates in BNP can join in the celebration of Bangabandhu's birth centenary due in 2020. Dr Chowdhury's such suggestions and desires to celebrate Bangabandhu's birth centenaryalongside his political associates in BNP sound like 'Bhuter Mukhe Ram Naam. (Ghosts often utter Holy names)

Are these kind of propositions suggested by Dr Chowdhury carry any meaning or significance to any sensible person in a state of situation where the founder of BNP is believed to have had his hand and tacit approval of the murder of Bangbandhu and subsequently gave indemnity to the killers with rehabilitating them in the diplomatic service of Bangladesh abroad? Going still further ahead, the political heir of the founder of BNP who became 3 time prime minister of Bangladesh and indulged in the spree of macabre celebration of her fake and manufactured birth day by cutting cake on 15th August every year to demean the sanctity of National Mourning Day on 15th August.

Such proposal of Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury is ridiculous and tantamount to his shrewd and subtle attempt to befool people over a burning issue which has divided the nation to great extent beyond repair.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the magnanimity of her father and equally witnessed how badly her father paid the price of magnanimity by giving his precious life. Being a successful prime minister of Bangladesh for 4 terms and a Statement by her own rights, Sheikh Hasina has earned enough sagacity and political acumen over the years to understand that how deadly it can be when the magnanimity falls on bad guys who do not deserve it.

It is most desired that the country needs to be united on all national issues irrespective of all paltry partisan difference in polities with core values of the country; like the spirit of Liberation war, Bangabandhu's declaration of independence at the first hour of 26th March 1971 and his place as the father of the nation; leaving no rooms for war criminals and their abettors in the polities of Bangladesh remaining unchanged. As a 'think tank' of BNP, Dr.

Jafarullah Chowdhury should take the lead in bringing BNP under the fold meeting above requirements before Dr. Chowdhury along with his political associates join Bangabandhu's birth centenary in 2020. God help us prevailing good sense in our collective psyche.
