Ineffective CCTV cameras letting crimes to rise in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, June 9: The closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 30 different points got damaged in the district. The authority concerned has not taken any initiative to repair the cameras.
The criminal syndicates are taking advantage of this. They are conducting different criminal activities in the district.
Members of the law-enforcing agencies are facing setback in identifying the criminals.
The city dwellers alleged that the authority concerned is apathetic towards the security issue. For that reason, they have not taken any steps to repair the cameras.
The correspondent found that, around 80 CCTV cameras were set around the city to bar the criminal activities.
In 2016, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) set CCTV cameras at 32 different points, and by the initiative of the Metropolitan Police, 8 CCTV cameras were set up.
Police were able to identify the criminals from the CCTV footages. The security also improved at that time.  
Now due to the ineffectiveness of the cameras, criminals are running different criminal activities.  
On May 25, miscreants set fire after stealing cash and goods from a shop named Porda Gallery. The shop owner had incurred loss of crore taka.
Prior to that, on April 1, in Ranibazar Area of the metropolitan city miscreants theft cash Tk 2 lakh, mobile and computer devices cutting the grill of a hardware store.
On February 8, thieves stole gold jewelleries, laptop, lakhs of taka from Joint District and Sessions Judge Md Abul Kalam Azad in Mithur Circle area of the city.  The city dwellers questioned the security system of the city.
Abdullah Al Mamun of Ward-13 said that since the CCTV cameras have been lying ineffective for a long time, many crimes have been taking place. The authority concerned does not take any steps regarding these.
Another city dweller Kamrul Hasan demanded repairing the cameras soon.
Police sources informed that a few days back, Tk 5 lakh have been stolen from a house of the city. Police recovered the money by identifying the thieves from the footage of a private CCTV camera.
During Eid, the criminal activities rise in the city, said the police sources.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajpara Police Station (PS) Hafizur Rahman said that the miscreants flee away after doing criminal activities. They are taking advantage of the ineffective CCTV cameras.  He further said that they are suffering problems in identifying the criminals.
He also said that when the CCTV cameras were effective, the city dwellers had advantages. Now, they are suffering due to the ineffectiveness of the cameras.  
Engineer of RASHIK Ashraful Haque said that They'll repair the damaged cameras soon.
