River erosion intensifies at Kazipur

SIRAJGANJ, June 22: The water flow from upstream is causing intensive river erosion in Kazipur Upazila of the district.
The intensity of the erosion is high at Singabari, Patagram and Shubhogacha areas under Sadar Union in the upazila.
Locals are panicked as crack has been found in the solid spur at Patagram area.
Locals said erosion began at Singabari and Patagram areas before Eid. A huge volume of erosion began on both sides. Croplands and houses are being eroded.
The houses which are under erosion threat are being transferred elsewhere.
Locals alleged that the local Water Development Board (WDB) is not taking any step to prevent the erosion.
Locals further alleged that due to lack of preventive measures, many villages, including Chormara, Jhumkail, Tarakandi, Barabari, Tenglahata, Doyel, Baghabari, Patagram, Purba Khukshiya, Khash Khukshiya, Projarpara, Betgati, Char Shingrabari, Bhurngi, Kanta Nagar, Baitara, Dublai and Shubogacha were eroded.
Sources said during the flood of 1998, eight solid spurs were installed to protect the right bank of Sadar Union and Shubhogacha and Maizbari of Kazipur Upazila from river erosion. At least seven spurs have already been extinct. Only the spur at Patagram area is left.
It is learnt that last year WDB dumped 10,000 geo bags to prevent the erosion. Due to the erosion, the front part of the spur and the CC block and geo bags of both sides collapsed.
Juran Ali of Patagram said due to the erosion, he had to move his house 13 times. At the end, he took shelter near the spur, but now the spur is also on the verge of erosion.
He demanded effective measures to stop the erosion.
Abdul Rashid of the same village said in the first week of June, there was huge erosion on the north and the south sides of the spur.
He alleged that the concerned authority has not taken any steps to protect the spur, which is under threat.
Habibur Rahman of Patagram alleged that erosion began at the spur area due to negligence of WDB.
He also expects the intervention of prime minister in this connection.
Deputy Assistant Engineer of WDB Rafiqul Islam, denying the allegations, said that it is difficult to understand the nature of the Jamuna River.
He said they dumped geo bags last year to prevent the erosion. This year, the erosion began before the rainy season.
He further said that they are monitoring the erosion. They are processing tender for permanent solution.
He also said that they are shifting the houses that are in risk of erosion to other places.
