SIRAJGANJ, July 10: The farmers in six upazilas of Sirajganj and Pabna districts are facing severe problem with their livestock as grazing lands and cowsheds in six upazilas of two districts have been submerged by flood water.
The incident happened when the flood control ring dyke near the Rautara Sluice Gate in Potajia Union under Shahjadpur Upazila was cut off by unidentified miscreants on Thursday night.
The affected upazilas are: Shahjadpur, Ullapara, and Tarash upazilas of Sirajganj District, and Faridpur, Bhangura and Chatmohar upazilas of Pabna District.
Alhak Fakir of Charachithulia Village at Potajia, Farman Sheikh, Bachchu Sarker, and Roshni of Rautara Village said, after 11pm on Monday, the miscreants cut off the western part of the dyke. At that time, most of the 12 hundred metres of dam was damaged under water pressure, and a vast area was flooded.
Crop farmers did not face any loss because crops have already been harvested, they said, adding that the cow farmers are at risk, and they are removing the cattle from the cow-farming areas and putting these on the high places of the houses. On the other hand, there is a lack of grass as the fields are submerged, they added.
The cow farmers complained that the fisher men and shallow boat owners might have cut off the dyke for profit.
Potajia Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Ali Bepari said that for the last two weeks, the dyke has been constructed with the chawkidar (night guard) for the protection of the dam; even then the miscreants cut the dyke; there was no damage to the crop,  but the goat and cow farmers are facing problems. Action would be taken after investigating the matter, he added.
Shahjadpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Monju Alam Sarker said that there was no major damage to the crops; only cattle farmers are facing problems.
Executive Engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board Shafiqul Islam said, "I do not know who has cut the dyke." But officials have been instructed to see the matter, he added.
He also said that the dyke was constructed at the cost of Tk.14 crore for the protection of the IRRI-Boro crop, and it has been possible to protect the crops from flood this year. The dyke has mainly been built for protecting the seasonal crops.
But after the damage of the dyke, the cow farmers fell into trouble, he continued.
