Thanks to two Mayors, city corporations

Eid - Ul - Azha is just over and after good many years the residents of capital Dhaka have been relieved from enduring long-standing stench of slaughtered animals and animal wastes. Given the post-Eid's city hygiene observed in the last decades, this is the first time as the capital city looks cleaner as well as fresh. The two City Corporations and the two Mayors Atiqul Islam of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Syed Khokon of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) deserve appreciation for giving this service to the city dwellers.    

However, the recent batch of monsoon showers also helped to wash away animal blood and waste. Surprisingly the rains had set in as soon as the Eid day was over, exactly in the likes of a divine blessing.

Aided by the rain's natural cleanser, the authorities of Dhaka North and South City Corporations took the task of cleaning more than 30,000 tonnes of waste coming out of sacrificial animals. During the waste management inauguration ceremony, the Mayor of South Dhaka had embarked upon the challenge to remove all animal wastes within 24 hours. The Dhaka North Mayor had also walked in the same direction. It can be said without a doubt, if not 100%, both Mayors have appeared largely successful in meeting their target within the stipulated timeframe.

On that note, both Mayors and the two City Corporations can claim  special thanks for being diligent and punctual in terms of removing all garbage produced from slaughtering sacrificial cattle during the holy festival. The two city authorities also supplied the citizens with necessary disposable tools, so to help the city dwellers to keep their home and localities clean. Moreover, garbage vans were dispatched on regular intervals in both parts of the city, to clean all types of rubbish produced by slaughtering sacrificial animals.

The recent admirable performance displayed by our city corporations was badly needed, especially to come out of its tarnished image for its timely move to stem the dengue outbreak in the capital city. They have been drawing flaks from the city dwellers.

However, despite a job well done, there are also reports of some failure too. Many dwellers living in the farthest corners of the newly extended parts of Dhaka have complained that their respective vicinities have been ignored by City Corporation workers. Now that the city has expanded, the two Corporations are also in need of more workers and additional resources.

A key factor which needs to be considered sincerely by the two City Corporations is that - other than just cleaning garbage - it is also vital to recycle the collected garbage efficiently. So far some 2,000 tonnes of waste have already been transported to a landfill. We believe the rest will also be properly managed and recycled. It can be used to produce biogas for generating electricity as many city corporations abroad have successfully executed such plants.

Nevertheless, drawing lessons from all its successes and failures, we believe Dhaka's two City Corporations will now re-emerge in the spirit of sincere, dedicated and efficient public service which will help the City Corporations to recover its flagging image.
