The National Mourning Day, marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members, was observed in Meherpur in a befitting manner.
As part of the programme, the national flag was hoisted at half-mast atop the offices of all government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings.
A mourning procession, led by deputy commissioner Ataul Gani, was brought out from the DC office premises. After parading the main streets of the town, the procession ended at Shahid Dr Shamsuzzoha park.
The other programmes included placing floral wreaths at the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the park and discussion on the life of the Father of the nation.
Meherpur zila parishad chairman Alhaj Golam Rasul, superintendent of Meherpur police SM Murad Ali, Meherpur municipality Mayor Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Meherpur Sadar upazila chairman Earul Islam, and liberation war affairs secretary of Meherpur district unit Awami League Ataul Hakim were present as special guests.
Heads of different government offices and students of different educational institutions were also present.
The District Information Office screened documentaries ‘Chironjib Bangabandhu’, ‘Swadhinata Amar Swadhinata’ and ‘Bangabandhu: Bangladesh’ at Government Boys' School ground.
Special doa-mahfils and prayers were offered at all religious institutions while competitions on painting, essay writing, Islamic songs and poems were held to mark the day.
