NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA, Sept 17: Allegations have been raised over widespread corruption in the recruitment of temporary female volunteers under Nabinagar Upazila Family Planning (FP) Department.
The complaints of corruption and nepotism were placed against president and member secretary of the recruitment committee.
It was alleged that with the help of acting Upazila Family Planning Officer and member secretary of the appointment committee Rokhsana Akhter, Upazila Chairman and committee president Md Moniruzzaman Monir recruited volunteers in 15 vacant posts without considering the candidates' qualifications and only through interview.
The candidates from deprived freedom fighter families and many meritorious ones demanded cancellation of the appointment.
Deprived candidates Rubina Akhter, Sakiba Akhter and Tania Akhter along with many others complained against all the corruption over this appointment on Saturday.
Sources said a candidate Tamanna Sultana from 2/Ka unit of Bagdahar Village under Purba Nabinagar Union was appointed, but she is not a resident of that unit, which violates the rules of recruitment.
Emon Miah, husband of Jannatul Mawa of Shibpur Union, alleged that Upazila Chairman Md Moniruzzaman Monir demanded Tk 1.5 lakh for his wife's selection.
Former President of Upazila Chhatra League Abdullah al Roman said the appointment was only given to those who paid the demanded money.
Chairman Md Moniruzzaman Monir denied all these allegations and said the appointments were completely merit-based and no corruption has happened. Those who requested and tried to get appointment in improper ways but failed are now making these allegations.
Member secretary of the committee Rokhsana Akhter also denied any corruption in the recruitment process.
Other members of the committee, including Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Masum, Dr Sohel Habib of Family Planning Department, and Health and Family Planning Officer Md Habibur Rahman claimed that the recruitment process was completely under the supervision of the chairman.
